3D CBCT scanning
A CBCT scan is a 3D X-ray of the jaw. It shows bone, nerves and sinuses in three dimensions, so implants and difficult extractions are planned on what is really there. We take it in-house, through Shri CBCT Center, our sister concern.

Draft, awaiting review by Dr. Swapnil B. Patil, BDS

What we need to seeOrdinary X-ray3D CBCT scan
Height and width of the boneHeight only, and it can be stretchedBoth, measured in millimetres
The nerve in the lower jawA rough lineIts exact path and depth
The sinus above the upper back teethOverlapping shadowsThe floor and its thickness
A wisdom tooth’s rootsOverlapping the nerve, so hard to judgeHow close they really are
Infection around a rootSometimes hiddenUsually visible
When we use one
- Implant planningWhere each implant goes, its length and angle, and whether bone needs adding first.
- Bone grafts and sinus liftsHow much bone there is, and how much is needed.
- Difficult wisdom teethHow close the roots sit to the nerve, which shapes how the tooth is removed.
- Complicated root canalsExtra or curved canals, and infection an ordinary X-ray can miss.
A routine check-up or filling does not need one. We only suggest a scan when the answer changes the plan.
What having a scan is like
- You stand or sit still while the scanner turns once around your head. It takes less than a minute.
- Nothing goes into your mouth except, sometimes, a small bite stick to hold your jaw still. There is no injection.
- Take off earrings, glasses, hairpins and anything metal near the head first.
- The scan uses X-rays, so we scan only the area the question needs. If you are pregnant, or might be, tell us before the scan.
- We go through the images with you on screen, and explain what they show.

Already had a scan elsewhere?
Bring it on a disc or drive, or email the files or a download link to cdic.pune@gmail.com. A recent scan can often be used, so you do not need another.
Ask for a second opinion on your scanWondering if you need a scan?
Ask us on WhatsApp, or book a consultation. We tell you whether a scan would change anything before you have one.
