Ceramic veneers
A ceramic veneer is a thin shell of porcelain bonded to the front of a tooth to change its colour, shape or size. It usually needs a small amount of enamel removed, so it is a long-term decision.

What a veneer is
A veneer is a shell of ceramic about as thin as a contact lens, made to fit the front surface of a tooth. Bonded in place, it changes how the tooth looks: its colour, its outline, its length, or the gap beside it. The back of the tooth and the way it bites stay as they were.
To keep the veneer from looking bulky, a thin layer of enamel is usually shaped away from the front of the tooth first. That is the part to weigh carefully: once removed, enamel does not return.
Planning before preparing
A good veneer starts with a plan of the whole smile rather than a single tooth. With digital smile design, the shape and length of the new teeth are planned on photographs of your face, and a temporary mock-up lets you see and feel the result in your own mouth before any tooth is touched.
Gentler options first
If the concern is colour alone, whitening may be enough. If teeth are crooked rather than misshapen, aligners can move them without removing enamel. Veneers make the most sense when shape, size and colour all need changing together.
It may suit you if
- Front teeth are stained in a way whitening cannot lift
- Edges are chipped or worn
- There are small gaps between the front teeth
- Front teeth are uneven in size or shape
- Teeth are slightly out of line, and you would rather not wear braces
Suitability is confirmed at your examination, never from a web page.
If you would rather wait
Veneers are cosmetic, so there is no health reason to hurry. Because enamel is usually removed to fit them, it is worth trying the gentler options first, such as whitening or aligners, and choosing veneers only if you still want the change.
Step by step
What happens at each stage, and roughly how long it takes. Your own timings are set out in your written plan.
Step 1: Smile assessment and preview
We talk through what you want to change, take photographs and scans, and show you a preview of the planned shape and length, often as a mock-up you can see in your own mouth.
You can take the preview home and think it over. Nothing is done to the teeth until you decide.
Step 2: Preparing the teeth
Under local anaesthesia, a thin layer of enamel is shaped from the front of each tooth, then an impression or scan is taken and temporary veneers are placed.
Step 3: Making the veneers
The veneers are made in the laboratory to the agreed shape and shade.
Step 4: Try-in and bonding
Each veneer is tried in for fit and colour, shown to you, and then bonded to the tooth and polished.
Step 5: Review
A follow-up visit checks the bite and the gums around the veneers.

Risks and recovery
Every treatment carries some risk. These are the ones to know about, and what is normal while you heal.
- The enamel removed does not grow back, so a veneered tooth will always need a veneer or a crown.
- Teeth can feel sensitive for a few days after preparation.
- A veneer can chip, crack or come loose. Avoid biting nails, pens or hard objects with veneered teeth.
- The colour of a veneer is fixed. Natural teeth beside it can darken with time.
- Veneers wear and may need replacing after some years.

Not here? Ask us directly. We reply during clinic hours, till 9 pm.
Ask on WhatsAppHow long do veneers last?
Ceramic veneers commonly last many years with care. Grinding, biting hard objects and gum recession shorten their life.
Will they look natural?
Ceramic lets light through in a similar way to enamel, and the shape and shade are planned to suit your face. The preview shows you the look before anything is done.
Can veneers be whitened later?
No. Whiten your natural teeth first, and the veneers are made to match.
Are veneers reversible?
Usually not, because enamel is removed. In a few cases a veneer can be bonded with little or no preparation; we tell you if yours is one.
Veneers or crowns?
A veneer covers the front of a healthy tooth. A crown covers the whole tooth and suits teeth that are heavily filled, broken or root-treated.
